The British Hat That You Don’t Want to Miss: The Porkpie

British people are known for cricket, tea and HM The Queen.tailored made suit  But in this article we will discuss another thing that they should be better known for: fashion. It’s about the pork pie hat, a statement of bon vivant in the British Victorian society.

The somewhat funny name comes from the resemblance with a pork pie, a traditional British pie.

What is it made of?

The pork pie is a hat made of felt, or less commonly of straw, bearing a great resemblance with the trilby and the fedora. The only difference is that unlike those two above, it has a flat top. Also, the crown is short and the indentation on it is all the way round.

What’s the main benefit?

By wearing this item, you add an extra 2-3 centimeters (1-2 inches) in height, which in turn, can make you look more imposing, and fix your size complex (if you have one)

Famous people who wore it

In popular culture, you can find this hat very popular among with jazz, blues and ska musicians and their fans.In the 1960s it was very popular in Jamaica, due to the birth of rude boy subculture, which later traveled to the UK.

The famous 1971 film “The French Connection” has meant a comeback for the Porkpie, due to the main character’s choice of apparel (Gene Hackman of course).

Even cartoon characters have been modeled to wear the Porkpie, for example the famous Yogi bear, Top cat, Hucky dog and Hockey Wolf all wearing the hat.

How can we match it?

First of all, we can match it with casual tailored made suit .

This gentleman is obeying to the rule above. He is wearing it with a brown shirt, matching the color of the shirt with the color of the ribbon, although the latter one is a lighter nuance of brown.

And yet another example :

The guy above is matching the color of the ribbon (black) with the color of his shirt. Because his shirt has 2 colors, black and gray with dots, the gray  goes with the lighter shade of the pork pie hat. The hat is made out of straws, so the way those are braided agrees with the lines on the gray side of the shirt.

The pork pie hat is also a common fashion accessory for anyone with a retro style, often worn with a suit or a bowling shirt.

Sock Matching Demistyfied

The socks are the most overlooked part of our wardrobe. We just think “I’ll throw some socks on so it keeps me warm” or we are ashamed that once we take them off in somebody’s home the smell will evacuate the room.

But why not think of using the socks to our advantage, in respect to our choice of tailored made suit ? As trivial as it may seem, a badly chosen sock combination may ruin your image.

So , let’s get started with :

How to match your socks

As a rule of thumb, you match your socks with your shoes, to create a continuum from head to toe.  The elements which need to be in sync are the pants, the shoes and the socks.

If you are bugged on which color your socks must be, bear in mind that black, brown, gray and white go with most colors.

For example,  beige pants with brown shoes go with a pair of regular brown, light brown or dark beige socks, or even a pair of patterned socks that blend any combination of these colors. The thing is avoiding any stark contrast between the pants and shoes.

Sometimes, you can go crazy, when wearing a suit

Just remember that business suits ask for a complementary color. You just can’t wear light colored socks with dark tailored made suit . Sock color luminosity should always be darker than the pants you are wearing.

Here’s a great example of wearing a sock color that is in-between that of the shoes and the pants. It creates a continuity that looks very good to the eye. Remember: shoes are darker than the pants.

Here’s another great example of wearing socks in a bold color, then matching them with the suit.

You can see how the guy above matches the socks with his red striped shirt, by wearing a somehow unusual color : burgundy. He takes no chances and leaves the shoes brown.

OK, now for more advice, for when you are wearing a suit. You should match the sock’s pattern with the shirt, tie or even the pinstripes in your suit.

Let’s say for example that you are wearing a black suit with a red tie and black shoes. You can wear black socks with a subtle red argyle pattern or polka dots.

You are safe as long as the background color of the socks is in tone with your shoes. In official settings, when a suit is mandatory, nylon, cotton or wool socks are the key. The length must be at half-calf so that it won’t be necessary for you to pull them up from time to time.

When you want to be more casual, you can choose the no-show socks. They are fitted right under the ankle, and are barely visible within the shoe.

Match them with sneakers or boat shoes and a stylish pair of shorts.

The main idea is that the rules from the formal attire apply here also; match the colors of your socks’ pattern to another part of your outfit. Let’s analyze for example the classic combo classic blue jeans, black shoes, white T-shirt.

The best pick would be with solid black socks or a black pair that features a subtle blue pattern. Either way, the socks go with the shoes not being in a stark contrast with them.

A final word for casual wear. Make sure you’re not wearing white half calf socks with dark shoes and shorts. This apparel is reserved for hispanic thugs, chollos and members of rap group Cypress Hill.

So, my final word would be : don’t screw it up. Socks aren’t such a hard part to master, but carelessness could ruin your outfit. Take care, take note and sort out those socks in your wardrobe.

“Style Icon Raoul Bova” or “How to Keep It Simple”

I just had to do an article on men style icons. The reason is very simple:there are certain men that simply are fashion heroes, when you pass them in the street you can’t help turning your head over and gazing like hypnotized.

For this, I’ve chosen Italian actor Raoul Bova.

Outside of his native Italy, Raoul Bova fits that status perfectly. He is the star of many Italian box office blockbusters like Comincio Tutto Per Caso and La Finestra Di Fronte. We, the rest of the world know him best  as Marcello from Under The Tuscan Sun, or Sebastian De Rosa, the archaeologist from Alien vs. Predator.

So what are his secrets? First of all, he doesn’t like to trade tradition for passing fashion trends. Bova wears tailored made suit, not tight ones. The cut is fuller than you might expect,but still it clings close enough to compliment his body frame . Details like peak lapels appear classic yet new again, diminishing the need for any other accouterments. The color of choice is the classic black.

When he is less formal, his color of choice is white, which is a wise decision, considering his darker skin complexion. The Mediterranean gene pool surely helped him a lot.

Absolutely! Just remember the number one rule he likes to apply: don’t over-complicate things. Just keep it simple, and your style will be top notch.

Nothing too fancy, right? He keeps it very simple: a blazer, white shirt, black belt with an oval belt buckle and blue tailored made suit. The white shirt is a very good choice, as I was telling you, because it creates good contrast with his hair color and skin complexion.

How to Dress If You’re Over 40

Time is unforgivable. It’s eventually going to catch us all up. Hell, I mean I’m 21 now, but I’ll be eventually 40 and over. This article though, is not about time passage and “memento mori” things, but about style. More specific, how to dress your age if you are 40 and over that age.

So, the first thing men over 40 must do is to…

Avoid fashion fads

You should maintain a style that is timeless, not timely. So the key here is avoiding the latest trends. A definite no are the fashion fads;recognize them in order to avoid them. Picture this: boutique sneakers and t shirts with something printed on them (worn mostly by guys in their 20s) on a 40 year old look creepy.

Please, no matter how old you are, do NOT wear something like this ever! Take a look at the Very store to find some great clothes, not too flashy, at affordable prices – perfect for someone in his 40s.

So, the bottom line is that fashion fads are for guys still experimenting with style. You are past that period in your life, hopefully.

Leave the past behind

Just because certain looks “made a comeback”, this doesn’t give you license to pull these items back out of your closet. As you well know, more often than not, the past is typically best left in the past.

In terms of fashion, here’s why: When certain looks cycle back around, they almost always return with a modernized twist, such as an updated cut or re-envisioned style. bespoke suit  Turn your attention to aviator sunglasses, for example.

How to Match Blazers and Shirts

When it comes to matching blazers (or sports jackets) with shirts, guys get a little confused. The bad news is there’s no straight answer to this. The good news is that there are dozens (even hundreds) of combinations you can try.

That’s why the choice of shirt is very wide. Very wide indeed. So let’s start with the blazer, because I assume you’ll buy less blazers than suits (obviously).

The “big idea” is to get one or two blazers and 5 to 10 shirts. All shirts should match either one or both blazers.

When choosing a blazer, you can go for a patterned one or for a non-patterned one.

If you’re new to men’s style, go for either one in a simple color, or a pinstripe. This will do two things:

1. Keep you on the safe side when matching blazers and shirts
2. Give you more freedom of choice when matching patterned shirts (otherwise you would have to match two patterns – not an easy thing to do)

The solid blazer

OK, so you’re off to buy a solid color blazer. You can go for a “safe” color or for a crazy color – your choice. Safe colors include: black, navy blue, dark blue, dark brown and different nuances of gray.

If this is your first blazer, I recommend you go for one of these colors. These “safe” colors are the most versatile when it comes to shirt color… in that you can wear almost any color.

If you’re wearing a black, navy or gray blazer, a light blue or a white shirt are the obvious choices.

The Golden Rule of Blazers: always try to make a contrast between the blazer and the shirt. Always. Yes, there are exceptions but unless you’re trying a more advanced outfit, you shouldn’t worry about them. For now, stick with a good contrast.

So if you’re wearing a black blazer, you’ve got two guidelines:

a. black goes with anything
b. you need to create a contrast

With that said, you can wear a wide variety of light colors. You can stick with a simple white shirt but that would be pretty boring (unless you add a white pocket square). You can go for pale colors such as pale blue, pale yellow etc.

Another thing you can do is go for patterned shirts with your black/blue/gray blazer. I usually wear my black blazer with a checked shirt (white shirt blue checks) or a striped shirt (light blue and blue alternating stripes).

Sometimes, when I want to go crazy, I wear a solid pink shirt with it. The combination is fantastic and this is something that I recommend you try. It’s time you learn to dress to stand out and wear bolder colors.
What about a brown blazer? A white shirt is the best thing you can pair it with (white shirts are very versatile, by the way).

Now let’s talk a little about blazers in bold colors. If the blazer is in a bold color, the secret is to wear a shirt in a “safe” color. You don’t want to mix a red blazer with a bright blue shirt – trust me.

So what color choices do you have?Here’s a few and I recommend that you stick with them. If the bold color is not in the list – don’t buy the blazer:

- white
- red
- light blue

Wear a white or a red blazer with a black shirt. Wear light blue blazers with either a black or a white shirt.

Patterned blazers

Wearing a patterned made to measure suit can be difficult but the final result will most likely impress everyone. Take a look at the photo below.

By far the easiest pattern you can wear is the pinstripe. Pinstripes are very thin vertical stripes on a blazer or a suit jacket:

Matching a pinstripe blazer with a shirt is just like matching a solid color blazer. The pinstripes are almost invisible BUT…

the really cool thing you could do is to repeat the color of the pinstripes. Color repetition is great in any outfit.

If you’re a newbie, simply wearing a patterned blazer with a uni shirt is enough. But if you want to go for a two patterns (pattern over a pattern), I’d definitely encourage you to do it.

Colored Socks – A Secret Way To Look Stylish

There are a TON of things to try to upgrade your style – we spoke a lot about them. But there are a few “unconventional” ways to stand out that are actually… kind of fun.

One of those secrets is to wear colored socks. Hold on there! If you’ve just raised your eyebrow, I saw that!

Give me a few minutes of your time to read this article and you’ll almost surely change your mind.

The thing that got me to write about them is the fact that I got a great price for two pairs of Zara socks the other week. I’ll show you how I matched them in a moment but first let me give you the theory.

Wearing colored socks isn’t all that hard – and it’s not too much if you’re a style newbie either. The rule is simple:

- choose a pair of colored socks (other than blue, gray, or navy blue);
- match that color with something else in your made to measure suit  

Still, you need to be careful with a couple of things.

First off, you shouldn’t wear regular socks with shorts. A pair of stylish cotton shorts is great during summer but make sure you choose either “no-show” or “low-cut” socks with them.

To show off you’re colored socks, all you have to do is roll up your pants. I’ve already discussed the topic of rolling up your jeans and khakis here so I’m not going to do it again. But wearing the right sock length with the different types of pants is important.

Notice how both orange and black repeat themselves in this outfit. And, I should also mention the black leather jacket  made to measure suit   which is absolutely fantastic (and manly).

These are just a few examples of what you can do with socks. This is truly a style gem that I’m giving you right here. The rest is up to you and, when you find the guts to wear them (like I did last night), you’ll want to wear them over and over again.
